Korean Zodiac Black Monkey: 1992 Meaning and Exact Dates
In K-SaJu (Korean astrology), the black monkey is the Ocean Monkey year, from Feb 4, 1992 at 10:48 p.m. to Feb 4, 1993. Why it's black, and why two black monkeys can be so different.

Maybe a video told you that people born in 1992 are "black monkeys," and you forwarded it to a friend born that year. Or you were born in January 1992 and your family has always called you a Monkey. Now you're about to get a monkey tattoo, and you want to be sure. Here's the short answer. In K-SaJu (Korean astrology), a black monkey is anyone whose birth year falls on Ocean Monkey (Im-sin, 壬申). That year ran from 10:48 p.m. on February 4, 1992 to 4:37 a.m. on February 4, 1993, Korea time. It also comes back every 60 years, so 1932 and 2052 are black monkey years too.
Why the Korean zodiac monkey is "black"
Every year in a K-SaJu chart gets two characters. The bottom one is the animal. The top one is a nature, one of ten, and the natures come in pairs that share an element. Each element has an old color: Wood is blue, Fire is red, Earth is yellow, Metal is white and Water is black.
1992 has Ocean on top. Ocean is Water, Water is black, and there's your black monkey. Koreans use these color names a lot around New Year, which is why you may have heard 2026 called the Year of the Red Horse.
There are five Monkey years in each 60-year loop, one per color:

One thing people miss: Ocean has a partner, Rain (Gye, 癸), and it's Water too. So 1993, the Rain Rooster (Gye-yu, 癸酉) year, is also black. Got a friend who calls herself a "black rooster"? That's why.
Are you a black monkey? The exact start and end
Western sun signs change around the 20th of each month. K-SaJu's year animal changes once a year, and not on January 1 or Lunar New Year. The year turns at the start of spring, one exact moment around February 4, and in 1992 it came late: 10:48 p.m. Korea time.
So a baby born in Seoul at 4 p.m. on February 4, 1992 is still a Jewel Goat (Sin-mi, 辛未), a white goat, even though Lunar New Year fell on that same day. A baby born at 11 p.m. that night is a black monkey.
The other end trips up more people. Say you were born on January 28, 1993. Lunar New Year had come early that year, on January 23, so nearly every zodiac chart online has called you a Rooster your whole life. In K-SaJu you're a black monkey. The Rooster year didn't begin until 4:37 a.m. on February 4.
Harin's note. Harin, a Seoul office worker, was born on January 28, 1993: "I was a Rooster for thirty years. After a long breakup I bought a beginner's book on K-SaJu, just to understand why my relationships always end the same way, and checked my own chart one night with a can of beer. The Rooster year started a week after I was born. I'm a black monkey! I laughed out loud alone in my apartment. The Rooster didn't vanish, though. It sits in my day pillar, the spot the book calls the love seat."

Born outside Korea? The start of spring happens at one moment for the whole planet. Only the clock reading changes. In New York it arrived at 8:48 a.m. on February 4, 1992. A New York baby born at 8:30 that morning is a Goat, and one born at 9 is a black monkey.
What a black monkey is like, and why it's only a sketch
Old Korean descriptions read the year from both characters at once. Ocean is deep, free and thinks big. The Monkey is quick, curious, inventive and good with people. Taken together, the black monkey is pictured as a fast thinker with a long view: someone who spots the clever route and gets bored once things turn routine. And the two halves get along. The Monkey is a Metal animal, and in the five-element loop Metal feeds Water, so the animal keeps topping up the Ocean above it.
Now picture two coworkers who both turned 34 this year. One talks fast and fills every silence. The other listens, plans and says one thing at the end of the meeting. Both are black monkeys. Put them in the same room and you'd never guess.
That's because the year is only two of the eight characters in your chart. When K-SaJu readers weigh a chart, the year animal counts for about 10 points out of 100. The month animal carries 30, and the day and hour animals carry 15 each. Your birth month shapes you about three times more than your year animal.
Same black monkey, different people
Ever read a "black monkey personality" post and thought, that's not me at all? Or sent one to your sister, also born in 1992, and she replied, "This is literally you, not me"? You're both right. Sharing a birth year is a bit like sharing a zip code. It says where you started, not who you are.
Social posts love to tell every 1992 baby to wear black or add more Water to their life. But some black monkeys already have plenty of Water in their chart, and others have almost none.
So the color names the year, not the person. Here are two sample charts from the same black monkey year. Black monkey A was born at 1 p.m. on June 10, 1992. Her birthday type is Candle Snake (Jeong-sa, 丁巳), and her chart holds six Fire characters with just one Water. For her, Metal is the most-needed element and Water is a helper.

Black monkey B was born at 6:30 a.m. on December 28, 1992. Her birthday type is Mountain Tiger (Mu-in, 戊寅), she arrived in a Rat month in deep winter, and her chart has three Water characters and no Fire at all. For her, Earth comes first and Water is on the go-easy side.

Black monkey love and match questions
You've got a date Friday with someone born in 1998. A Tiger. Then a post on your feed says Monkey and Tiger clash. The two do sit opposite each other on the zodiac wheel, and K-SaJu calls that a clash.
But in our match score, the two year animals are worth 10 points out of 100, marked "for reference." The two day animals, each person's love seat, are worth 25. A year clash is the smallest slice of the picture. Keep the date.
Questions people ask about the black monkey year
Is 1992 a black monkey or a water monkey? Both. They're two names for the same year. "Water Monkey" names the element, and "black monkey" is the Korean color name for that element. We call it the Ocean Monkey.
Is a black monkey year unlucky? No. A year isn't good or bad for everyone. A year is a shared backdrop, and what it means for you depends on the rest of your chart.
What color is my year if I'm not a Monkey? Use the last digit of the year, as long as you were born after early February. 0 or 1 is white, 2 or 3 is black, 4 or 5 is blue, 6 or 7 is red, and 8 or 9 is yellow. A 1995 baby is a blue pig. A 2000 baby is a white dragon.
How to check your own animals
Your year animal is a fun start. It's also the smallest part of you. A free life reading lays out all four pairs with their animals and colors, and flags a birth close to the start of spring. Then look up your birthday type in the 60 birthday types guide, since that pair says far more about you than 1992 ever could.
Harin is a fictional character we use to tell these stories. The readings come from Rocky Saju's calculations.
