Your birthday type: the 60 day types in K-SaJu (like Ocean Rat)

In K-SaJu (Korean astrology), the day you were born gives you one of 60 birthday types, like Ocean Rat or Sun Horse. Here is why there are 60, how to read the two halves, and how to find yours.

Your birthday type: the 60 day types in K-SaJu (like Ocean Rat)

You might know your star sign and your birth-year animal. K-SaJu (Korean astrology) adds a third label that many Koreans find the most accurate of all: your birthday type. It comes from the exact day you were born, and there are 60 of them. Here is how they work and how to read yours.

What a birthday type is

In K-SaJu, your birth moment becomes four pillars: year, month, day and hour. Each pillar has two characters, a nature on top and an animal below. The pillar for your birth day is the one readers look at first, because its top half stands for you yourself.

We give each day pillar a simple name made of its two halves. 壬子 (Ocean Rat) is the Ocean nature sitting on the Rat. 丙午 (Sun Horse) is the Sun nature sitting on the Horse. That two-word name is your birthday type.

Why there are exactly 60

There are ten natures and twelve animals, so you might expect 120 combinations. There are only 60, and the reason is neat.

Both lists alternate between two kinds: an outward, active kind and an inward, quiet kind. Oak is outward and Vine is inward, Sun is outward and Candle is inward, and so on down the list. The animals alternate the same way, starting with the Rat. A nature only ever pairs with an animal of the same kind. Start with Oak Rat, step both lists forward one place at a time, and after 60 steps you land back at Oak Rat.

Days follow this cycle without a break, so the same birthday type comes around every 60 days. That means about six days a year share your type, and a friend with a completely different birthday can still be your birthday twin.

How to read the top half: your nature

The top half describes how you show up in the world. These are the ten natures and the feel of each:

  • Oak: a big tree that grows straight up and leads
  • Vine: bends, adapts, and blooms anywhere
  • Sun: bright, warm, and impossible to miss
  • Candle: a soft light that comforts people
  • Mountain: steady, solid, the one people lean on
  • Garden: practical and helps things grow
  • Steel: tough, direct, and loyal
  • Jewel: refined, sharp, and detail-obsessed
  • Ocean: deep, free, and thinks big
  • Rain: quiet, intuitive, and gentle

How to read the bottom half: your love seat

The animal below is the ground you stand on. It is the side of you that people see up close, at home and in love. Readers also call it your love seat, because it is where a partner sits in your chart.

What matters most is how the energy in that seat relates to your nature on top. A few examples of how we read it:

  • If the seat holds the same energy as you (your mirror), an equal, friend-like partner tends to feel easiest.
  • If it holds energy that looks after you (your caregiver), a cozy relationship where you lean on each other tends to fit.
  • If it holds steady, rule-keeping energy (your anchor), you are often drawn to someone dependable and responsible.

There are ten of these relationships in total, and every birthday type has its own one.

Five birthday types up close

Here is a taste of how different types read. Each one has its own page in our guide.

Ocean Rat: The Deep Ocean

Ocean Rat is deep, wide, and hard to read. They are wise beyond their years, brave, and think on a big scale. In love they tend to be intense and all or nothing. Green flag: calm in a storm. Red flag: can turn small debates into a must-win.

Oak Rat: The Midnight Scholar

Oak Rat is calm on the outside with a whole library on the inside. They learn fast and keep learning. They often fall for brains first, and a deep talk is their love language. Their watch-out is hiding hurt feelings behind a calm face.

Oak Rat and Ocean Rat share the same animal, yet they read very differently. The Rat seat feeds the Oak like water feeds a tree, so Oak Rat is a type that grows by being looked after. For the Ocean, the same Rat seat is more water on top of water, which makes Ocean Rat one of the most powerful types of all. Same animal, different nature, different story.

Sun Horse: The Noon Sun

Sun Horse is all passion and main-character energy, with huge charisma and no fear of being out front. The tip for this type is to put all that power into work rather than arguments.

Jewel Rooster: The Perfect Jewel

Jewel Rooster is refined and detailed, with high standards and great taste. In love they are devoted and notice every little effort. The flip side is being too strict with everyone, themselves included.

Mountain Dragon: The Dream Mountain

Mountain Dragon has a big heart and bigger dreams, and tends to be the friend everyone leans on in a crisis. They make protective, generous partners, though they can be as stubborn as a mountain.

Birthday type vs star sign vs zodiac animal

These three labels measure different things, so they rarely line up:

  • Star sign (Western astrology) comes from where the Sun was on your birth date, and there are 12 of them.
  • Birth-year animal (the Korean zodiac) comes from your birth year, and it changes at the start of spring, around February 4, not on January 1.
  • Birthday type (K-SaJu) comes from your exact birth day, and there are 60 of them.

So you could be a Leo, born in a Dragon year, with a Rain Pig birthday type. All three can be true at once.

How to find yours

Your birthday type needs your birth date, and sometimes your birth time. Here is why. Rocky Saju follows the common Korean practice of shifting the clock by 30 minutes for the hour pillar, and treats a birth between 11:30 pm and 12:30 am on a Korean clock as part of the earlier day. If you were born around midnight, your type depends on that rule, which is also why different apps can disagree.

If you were born outside Korea, the city matters too. We calculate with your birth city's time zone and local sun time.

The quickest way to see your type is our free life reading. Your birthday type card sits at the very top of the result, followed by your elements and your 10-year chapters. You can also browse all 60 birthday types and look up friends, partners or your favorite celebrities.

Don't let one label define you

Your birthday type is two of your eight characters. The month you were born in shapes your chart a lot too, so two Ocean Rats born in summer and winter can feel like different people. Use your type as a starting point for conversation and reflection, not as a box.
